5 Unexpected Ways to Use Shatta That Teta Never Told You (But Would Approve Of)

5 Unexpected Ways to Use Shatta That Teta Never Told You (But Would Approve Of)

Shatta has traditionally been a humble condiment; a simple plate topper that brings a burst of fresh heat to any meal. While there’s nothing wrong with that, at Fil we like to take things one step further. Our Shatta doesn’t just top a quality meal, it makes the meal top-quality.

Here are five unexpected ways to bring that Palestinian heat into new territory (without making Teta roll her eyes).

1. Shatta Marinade Magic

Forget bottled sauces, mix your favourite Shatta with your favourite spices and aromatics to make the ultimate marinade. For example, mix either our Bird’s Eye, Jalapeno or Habanero Shatta’s with olive oil, lemon, garlic, and a touch of honey  to make the ultimate marinade for any meat, fish or roasted vegetables. The fermentation adds depth and tang, creating layers of flavour that develop beautifully when grilled or roasted. Better yet, add some Shatta Hot Sauce to some buttermilk next time you make fried chicken. You’ll thank us later.

2. Shatta Mayo (a.k.a. Your New Table Essential)

Stir a spoonful of Bird’s Eye or Habanero Shatta, or Shatta Hot Sauce, into mayo or labneh for an instant spicy spread that works on everything — sandwiches, fries, chicken. The result? Creamy, fiery, and perfectly balanced. It’s the condiment that’ll make you forget any other spicy mayo ever existed.

3. The Spicy Shatta Margarita

Add a teaspoon of Shatta to your margarita mix for a kick that is sure to set your night (or day) off right. The fermented chili adds depth and savoury heat, cutting through the lime and tequila perfectly. It’s fiery, refreshing, and a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

4. Shatta Butter for the Win

Blend softened butter with a spoon of your Shatta of choice, a pinch of salt, and a squeeze of lemon. Spread it on corn, melt it over grilled fish or meat, or use it as a base for a cheese sauce for the most incredible mac and cheese. It’s rich, spicy, and totally unexpected.

5. Shatta Drizzle (Yes, Even on Dessert)

Stay with us on this one. Mix Bird’s Eye or Habanero Shatta - or Shatta Jam of course - with a little honey or date syrup to make a sweet-spicy drizzle. Pour it over roasted figs, chocolate mousse, or even vanilla ice cream. The heat hits after the sweetness, and the contrast is addictive. For garnish, try sesame seeds - wow.

As we know, good food evolves, but it never forgets where it came from. These are the flavours of home, reimagined for the modern table. Still made with love, still proudly Palestinian, just with a little extra fire.
